The Faroe Islands are a group of islands all under the Kingdom of Denmark. The country is an autonomous province since 1948 and are not part of the European Union, although Denmark is. There are around 48 000 inhabitants in the country and 17 000 in the capital Torshamn. Most important for the economy is the fishing industry, which accounts for almost all export from the Faroe Islands.

A public national holiday is a day on which most people are free from work and school.
